The British Night Orienteering Championships Mytchett, Surrey Sat 24th January 2009
|
1. Travel
The car park is off the B3012 (Gapemouth Road) at the locally known “camping ground” map ref. SU922561, the event will
only be signed off this road. Competitors are requested to approach the competition by traveling west through Brookwood
on the A324. The road turns south towards Pirbright and passes underneath the railway, here take the immediate right
onto the B3012, the car park is then on your left after 2km. Sorry but we need to make a £1 car park fee to cover the land
charges for parking.
2. Enquiries
Enquiries is located within the competition assembly hut which adjoins the car park (and should be well lit so it should stand
out). Anyone who has pre-entered but not paid or who needs to hire a dibber should do so at Enquiries before going on to
the Start. SI electronic punching for all courses. Anyone arriving alone who wishes to be checked back in please leave your
car keys at Enquiries.
3. Maps and Terrain
The map is 1:10,000 surveyed by Dave Peel in early 2008 for night winter orienteering. Maps will be printed on waterproof
paper but not bagged. Size will be A4+. The area is predominantly forested, criss-crossed by a multitude of paths from
forestry work, military exercise and more recently, active mountain bike groups. There is one steep slope running roughly
north south rising 30m in 90m, to the west of this slope the ground falls away into gentle wooded re-entrants, to the east
lie smaller hills and slopes with deep military trenches. Most of the forest is fast and runnable typically offering
orienteering speeds of 4.5min/k in the day.
Mytchett actually lies within the Ash Pirbright Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and in accordance to Section 28I of the
Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000). Southern Navigators
have taken all reasonable steps consistent with the proper exercise of orienteering on the land, to further the conservation
and enhancement of the SSSI. We are very grateful for the direction and understanding shown by both Natural England
and Defence Estates in allowing the competition to be held on the land.
Natural England considers that provided the conditions listed below are complied with there will be no significant harm to
the designated features of the area.
• The proposed race /event routes are designed to avoid all wet habitats which are marked on the map accompanying
this permission and any wet areas already noted on the map supplied by Southern Navigators.
• Dogs must only be allowed in car parks and kept on leads
To adhere to these requirements several areas on the map are marked OOB please do avoid, courses have been planned to
minimise the risk of entry.
There is also one area of approx 250m2 that is marked OOB where a local scout group are camping for the evening, please
also avoid.
4. Assembly Area
The main assembly area will be within the hut at the side of the car park. Inside you should find, enquiries, download, start
lists, results and prize giving. Also within the compound we will have first aid, toilets; squash for those who have finished,
Ultrasport and Wilkinsons sausage/burger bar.
5. Starts and Start Procedure
The route to the Start and Finish (both 700m from Enquiries approx 12 minutes walk) will be signed from the assembly hut
using tape and yellow “glow sticks”. The route crosses a minor road where the traffic is infrequent but travels fast please
be very careful and remember the drivers are not expecting people to be popping out of the woods! The Start and Finish
are collocated so clothing can be left for the duration of your race, please bring a bag if you wish to leave items.
At start -3 competitors will be called forward and SI units checked
At start -2 control description sheets will be made available
At start -1 competitors move forward to the start line, we will be using a punching start, PLEASE ensure you punch the
start before moving forward to pick up your map.
Maps are all 1:10 000 5m contours – slightly larger than A4. They are produced on waterproof paper with descriptions on
the front right side. Competitors on M21L will have back to back maps please make sure you start on part one first.
Competitors late for their start will be allowed to start under the direction of the start official without affecting other
competitors on the same course.
6. Finish
The finish will be in sight of the start. Once you have completed your course, remember to collect any left items at the
start and follow the same route back to the assembly area to download your times. We will operate an honesty system in
allowing you to hold on to your maps after you finish – please respect this for the integrity of the competition and do not
show to fellow runners yet to compete.

splits and routegadget.
10. Safety
First Aid cover will be provided by the Red Cross. A 4wd ambulance will be located adjacent to Enquiries. Whistles
advised. If the weather is really bad, event cancellation notices will be placed on the SN and the British Orienteering
websites. If in doubt, please check.
If cagoules are required then notices to that effect will be placed in suitable places. Competitors should take with them
spare lighting, a whistle, and, if you have one, a mobile phone. Call 07879 260218 if you need to. Mobile reception is poor in
this part of the Forest so you may not be able to get a signal, but if you have no phone you have even less chance.
All participants are warned that Mytchett is a military training area with numerous unmarked trenches. Barbed wire and/or
low wire may be present on ruined fences – beware! Do not touch suspicious objects. You are responsible for your own
safety.
Safety Bearing. - South to the road and then head east back to the assembly area.
You must report to download.
Competitors are reminded that you take part at your own risk. Courses close at 9.30 pm.
11. Prize Giving
If you are a trophy holder please return the trophy before you start to enquiries.
This will take place as soon as all class winners are known. This will hopefully be around 9pm “ish” inside the assembly hut.
Will people returning their trophies from last year do so at enquiries prior to their run. Trophies are given to all Long class
winners, please try and stay for the prize giving to give a little cheer to those that have performed well, we are a small
group that enjoy the challenge of night orienteering so we should encourage our winners - I’ll try to keep the ceremony
brief but dignified.

I am sorry that I did not correctly anticipate when
darkness would fall. To compensate, BNOC race time
will operate 30 minutes behind GMT, i.e. If your start
time is at 17:25 you will actually start at 17:55 GMT.
