JK 2018 success for SN!
Snow and mud for all; medals for some
Congratulations to our new JK Individual Champion Charlotte Slade in W10, and to our winning relay team of Ruth Holmes, Katherine Bett and Kitty Bray in the Womens Short class.
All the detailed results can be found via the JK web site here from the sprints on Friday, to the forest on Sat/Sun and relays on Monday. Well done everyone for enduring the cool weather, snow and mud, mud, mud ...
To the surprise of many, the JK Relays went ahead as planned on Easter Monday. Cars were parked on every available piece of firm-ish ground within the Beaudesert scout camp, and tents were rescued from their collapses under the weight of overnight snow, and re-positioned beside the river of mud that was the run-in, and the sea of mud that was the spectating area.
After late withdrawals due to illness and injury we only fielded 8 complete teams, but came away with three podium finishes. Defending their title from last year, the Mini Relay (M/W12-) team of Charlotte, Aidan and Tommy put in a great performance to finish second behind a strong SYO team. The Senior Women (W120+) team of Sarah, Woo and Mel also came narrowly second after a last leg head-to-head race, again with SYO.
We saved the best til last, with the Womens Short team of Ruth, Katherine and Kitty winning by a significant margin of 6 minutes. Ruth led narrowly at the end of leg 1, and Katherine kept us very much in the hunt, handing over to Kitty just seconds adrift. Kitty kept her head, ran her own race, and reappeared from the forest with a clear lead, collecting her team mates on the run-in for an emphatic victory.
And if you're wondering what happened to our club treasurer in the Devizes to Westminster canoe race - it was abandoned for safety reasons, with nobody allowed to proceed beyond Reading due to the dangerously high flow on the River Thames.
